Arsenal’s short-term problems

What might Mikel Arteta be able to achieve with this Arsenal side if he could just call on a core of consistent, even league average defenders?

There is individual talent throughout this backline and players who on their day can have a major positive impact on winning teams. Arsenal’s problem is not so much the peak their defence can reach but its standard deviation.

This is a defence capable of running through six games conceding just two goals but who opposing strikers know will hand them opportunities if they are just alive to their mistakes.

Heung-min Son, who picked up Sead Kolasinac’s woeful pass to draw Spurs level moments after Alexandre Lacazette’s glorious opener, had already profited from the Gunners this season, scythed down by Granit Xhaka making a reckless tackle that simply didn’t need to make.

Kolasinac told how he could have avoided mistake for Tottenham equaliser

Jamie Redknapp has highlighted the pass Sead Kolasinac should have played after his error that helped Tottenham equalise against Arsenal.

The Gunners took the lead through a thunderbolt striker from Alexandre Lacazette but were pegged back almost immediately.

Heung-Min Son levelled the scoreline after latching on to a loose pass from Kolasinac, outpacing David Luiz and chipping past Emiliano Martinez

It was a poor mistake from Arsenal’s left-centre-back and an unnecessary pass according to Redknapp.

Instead of turning back towards his own goal, the former Liverpool midfielder lamented Kolasinac for not playing a simple ball inside to Kieran Tierney, which would have allowed Arsenal to play out.

Mesut Ozil update

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has given the latest update on the future of outcasted midfielder Mesut Ozil.

The German international has not featured for the Gunners since the restart and was left out of the squad for the north London derby defeat against Tottenham on Sunday evening.

The midfielder has been out of action with back trouble, but his absence from squads since the restart has led to speculation that his future lies away from the Emirates Stadium.

Latest reports suggest that the 31-year-old is looking at a move away from Arsenal, but is willing to wait until his contract runs out at the end of next season.

Speaking during his post-match press-conference, Arteta was asked about the player.
